WASHINGTON- Congressman Lee Terry has signed a discharge petition that would require bills be posted on the Internet before they are voted on. H.Res. 554 is a bipartisan resolution that would require all non-emergency legislation to be posted online 72 hours before it comes to the floor for a vote. -30-
“Large pieces of legislation were passed this year with little time to review important details,” said Congressman Terry. “The 1,000+ page stimulus bill was voted on after allowing Members and the public only 15 hours to read the bill. In June a cap and trade bill was pushed forward with 300 of its pages being snuck into the bill in the middle of the night. It is time for this nonsense to stop. The American people deserve to know their Members of Congress actually know what is in legislation before casting their vote.”
A discharge petition requires 218 signatures to bring the measure to the floor for a vote. A discharge petition is used when the Speaker of the House will not allow a piece of legislation to the floor for a vote.
