WASHINGTON - Congressman Lee Terry (R-NE) today issued the following statement regarding the decision by U.S. Attorney General Holder to prosecute Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, in a New York federal court: "Our country has a long history of using military courts to deal with enemy combatants captured on the battlefield. No one disputes that Khalid Sheik Mohammed is a terrorist that committed violent acts against Americans on our soil. But the decision by the U.S. Attorney General to try this terrorist in a civilian court is a huge mistake," said Terry. "Terrorists should not be extended the same constitutional rights as U.S. citizens such as a presumption of innocence, the right to remain silent or confront witnesses. This will be nothing more than a show trial that will just give Sheik Mohammed an opportunity to spout his anti-American rhetoric. " - 30 -
