ABORTION

I believe our Constitution protects the rights of all individuals, born and unborn.

I believe life begins at conception. I have always been a strong advocate for pro-life policies and believe in the sanctity of life.  I oppose any legislation that would allow for the destruction of human life.
Although the Freedom of Choice Act has not yet been introduced in the 111th Congress, I am opposed to this legislation.  I joined several of my colleagues in sending President Obama a letter asking him to withdraw his pledge to sign the Freedom of Choice Act.  This bill would overturn virtually all pro-life laws throughout the country.
The White House and House Leadership has announced that they plan to revoke the pro-life rule that protects doctors and other health care workers from not performing an abortion or offering family planning counseling despite their religious or moral beliefs.  This is an infringement on the religious rights of doctors and health care workers to force them to provide care they would otherwise be opposed to.
On March 9, 2009 President Obama signed an executive order that will free up federal tax dollars to fund human embryonic stem cell research.  Significant advances have been made using stem cells in research that does not involve the creation or destruction of human embryos.  I support research that is done in an ethical way that respects the dignity of human life.  I do not support using taxpayer dollars to fund embryonic stem cell research.

The 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill includes a number of anti-life provisions, including:

•    25% increase in funding for the United Nations Fund for Population Assistance.
•    Increase funding, by 19%, for international family planning
•    Decreases funding for Community Based Abstinence Education programs by 12%
